LaMorre becomes the first 87's defenseman to commit to an NCAA school

The New Jersey 87's are excited to announce that defenseman Geoff LaMorre has committed to play Division III hockey at Fitchburg State University for the 2019-2020 season.

LaMorre is a 20-year-old blue liner from Hubley, Nova Scotia, and is playing in his first year with the 87's. In 36 games this season, LaMorre has recorded nine goals and eight assists for 17 points.

Head coach Adam Houli spoke about LaMorre, who became the fourth 87's player to make a college commitment.

"Geoff has been steady all year, he came here with a mission to commit to NCAA hockey and he has done just that. He is a phenomenal defender who can push the pace offensively but also be very strong one-on-one defensively," Houli said. "He will translate well into the college game with his size and skating ability. I am very happy that Geoff trusted the process, trusted our team, our league and our vision. His accomplishment is well deserved."

Fitchburg State University is a Division III school located in Massachusetts. Playing in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference, the Falcons are led by head coach Dean Fuller. LaMorre spoke about his commitment and explained what it means to join the program.

"I'm very honored to become a part of Fitchburg's program. It's always been a goal of mine to play NCAA college hockey and I'm glad it has come true. I'm really excited for this opportunity and I'm very much looking forward to the next four years," LaMorre said.

Since coming to New Jersey, LaMorre has proven to be a shutdown defenseman while having the ability to find the score sheet. He spoke about his development as a hockey player under the 87's organization.

"The 87's have really helped me play my best hockey this year, as well as developing the proper habits and decision making that will certainly aid in transitioning my game to the collegiate level," he said. "From the hours we put into the weight room, to our extensive video analysis, to the consistently high level of practice, I believe the 87's organization has really helped me with developing my game the right way this year."

The 20-year-old defenseman will be accompanied by a familiar face, as forward Trent Shanley committed to Fitchburg earlier this season.

"It's always a little easier to go into a new environment with a familiar face and I hope Trent and I can bring to Fitchburg State some of the values that have come to define the 87 way," LaMorre said.

The 87's organization would like to congratulate Geoff and his family as he prepares to advance his hockey career to the Division III collegiate level.
