87's start five-game road trip with a pair of wins

The New Jersey 87's extended its winning streak to four games this weekend with a 5-3 win against New York Applecore on Saturday and a 2-1 victory over the Jersey Wildcats on Sunday.

Kyle DePalma, Sean Carver and Austin Bell all had multi-point games while Tristen Gillispie and Alex Neverve each earned a win over the weekend. The pair of wins improves the team's record to 22-6-2.

In Saturday's win, DePalma opened the scoring at 5:41 of the first period. Applecore evened the score three minutes later with a goal from Jason McNamara, but Antonio Briggs-Blake put New Jersey ahead at the end of the period with his fifth goal of the season. Sean Carver had the primary assists on both goals.

Jake Ondrejko extended the lead 88 seconds into the middle frame with his sixth goal of the season. McNamara notched his second goal of the contest at 11:41, but DePalma responded with his second goal of the game on a power-play tally 3:55 later.

Ian Rogers trimmed the deficit back to a goal for Applecore with a goal 7:36 into the third period. Brad Heuer replenished the 87's two-goal lead once more with a tally midway through the period, capping off the 5-3 victory. Tristen Gillispie made 19 saves on 22 shots to earn his sixth win of the season.

Sunday's game against the Wildcats proved to be a tighter game with neither side breaking through on the scoresheet until the midway point of the game. Austin Bell and Jack Lane scored their goals a minute and 39 seconds apart to give the 87's a 2-0 lead in the second period.

John Salvia put the Wildcats on the board at 9:17 of the third period, as they frantically tried to erase the two-goal deficit. Their efforts were unsuccessful as Alex Neverve stopped 23 of the 24 shots he faced, and made some key saves in the final minute of regulation while the 87's were on the penalty kill. It was the San Jose native's third win of the season and his first since November 12.

The road trip kicks off a stretch of five consecutive road games for the 87's. They'll head to Warwick, Penn. next weekend for the third and final EHLP showcase this season. The 87's will face Walpole Express on Friday at 8 p.m., and will play the following day at 2 p.m. with a contest against the Valley Jr. Warriors.
