Veteran forward will join Raiders this fall for their inaugural season

The New Jersey 87's are proud to announce that Bryan Van Ness has committed to play Division III hockey at Rivier University for the 2021-2022 season.

Van Ness is a 20-year-old forward from New York, NY and is in his second season with the 87's EHL team. He recorded 16 points (7g, 9a) in 29 games this season while putting up 42 points (19g, 23a) in 73 total games with the team.

Head coach Adam Houli spoke about Van Ness' commitment and the steps he took to achieve his goal.

"Bryan’s game has been very good over the two years of being an 87. He focused on setting himself up to play college hockey and was focused and determined in this offseason, which showed when he came back," Houli said. "He has a good first step and that will cause headaches for a lot of defensemen."

Rivier University is a Division III program located in Nashua, New Hampshire, and their ice hockey program will start its inaugural season in the Fall of 2021. The Raiders, competing independently from a conference, will be led by head coach Eric Sorenson.

Van Ness discussed what it means for him to get a commitment, and the excitement of joining a hockey team that is just starting up.

"It's a big stress reliever, I've been waiting two years to get a commitment, and now that it's done it feels great," Van Ness said. "It's a brand new program, so I'm excited to help build it from the start. Being one of the first ones to play there, I'm ready to help get it going."

The '00 born forward has proven himself as a prolific two-way forward who can play in all situations. Van Ness talked about his time with the 87's and the biggest factor that earned him a college commitment.

"My goal was to just work hard both years while being the hardest working player on the ice. (Adam) Houli and coach Matty (Kiernan) set the bar high, and I want to maintain that same kind of work ethic going into college."

The 87's organization would like to congratulate Bryan and his family as he gets ready to advance his hockey career to the Division III collegiate level.
