Maynard becomes the 2nd player to commit to an NCAA program this season

The New Jersey 87's are proud to announce that forward Andrew Maynard has committed to play Division III hockey at Tufts University for the 2020-21 season.

Maynard, a 20-year-old from Naperville, IL, is playing in his second season with the 87's. Last season he recorded 22 points (6g, 16a) in 30 games. This year he is second on the team in scoring with 43 points (20g, 23a) in 25 games. 87's head coach Adam Houli spoke about Maynard's commitment and what it means for the program.

"To have a player committed to such a prestigious academic and athletic conference is unbelievable. Andrew has been with us for two years and had his sights on Tufts from day one," Houli said. "He has dominated this year and has deserved every recognition he has gotten which has culminated in committing to Tufts. They are getting a great player on the ice and an even better person off the ice. I'm beyond excited and happy for Andrew."

Tufts University is a Division III school located in Somerville and Medford, Mass. Competing in the New England Small College Athletic Conference, the Jumbos are led by head coach Pat Norton. Maynard expressed his excitement in joining the program for next season.

"It's something I'm very thankful for, committing to a program like Tufts. I'm humbled by it, and there were so many people that have helped me along the way, and I can't thank them enough for helping me achieve my dream of playing college hockey," Maynard said.

Maynard also spoke about his growth with the 87's, as his point totals nearly doubled just halfway into the 2019-20 season while emerging as a leader on the team.

"The coaches here have done such a great job ingraining good habits that get you ready for the collegiate level. It really develops you as a player, and it shows considering this has been a really good year for me," he said.

In addition to having an excellent year with the 87's, Maynard was selected to the EHL All-Star Team that played against three Division III schools. He picked up an assist in the team's 1-1 tie against Fitchburg State University. Maynard spoke about the showcase and getting a first-hand look at some college hockey programs.

"The experience was absolutely fantastic. It's a great thing the EHL provides for the players and it's so great to get a taste of the college experience both on and off the ice," Maynard said.

The 87's organization would like to congratulate Andrew and his family on his accomplishment as he gets ready to advance his hockey career to the collegiate level.
