The New Jersey 87's extended their winning streak to seven games with a 5-1 road win over the Little Flyers on Saturday, but snapped it as they fell to New York Applecore on Sunday night by a score of 2-0.

Jack Lane recorded two goals and an assist in the 5-1 win over the Little Flyers. In that seven-game winning streak, the 87's scored four or more goals per game.

"It was a road victory that we need to be accustomed to," head coach Adam Houli said. "It wasn't 100 percent pretty, but we got the job done."

Sunday night's loss to New York, however, marked the first time the 87's have been shut out. Applecore goaltender Justin Padilla made 43 saves in the win. Despite the high shot total, Houli said the team needs to improve the quality of their scoring chances.

"We needed to bury rebounds, and we just didn't do a good enough job on our second and third chances which we got, but we couldn't bear down and do it," he said.

Neither team was able to break through in the first two periods. It remained scoreless until 2:18 of the 3rd period, as Jason McNamara took advantage of a turnover from 87's defender Braxton Kilgore and ripped a shot off the post and in for a power-play goal.

The 87's spent the rest of the period in New York's end looking for the tying goal, but were unable to solve Padilla. With 49 seconds remaining in regulation, Ethan Behar floated the puck from the red line and into the empty net to give Applecore a 2-0 lead.

Despite the loss, the 87's had a successful showing off the ice as part of breast cancer awareness night. Fans contributed to 50/50 raffles and took part of the 'chuck-a-puck' contest to raise money for groups that combat the disease, while the players on the ice wore pink jerseys to cap it off.

Tristen Gillispie, who made 21 saves on 22 shots on Sunday, was happy to be a part of the charitable effort.

"It was a really good event, and I loved the turnout. We raised a lot of money for a good cause and I was really proud of the fans for coming out and backing us for this effort," he said.

The 87's will hit the road and head to Boston this weekend for a two-game set against the Jr. Rangers, who are 8-1-2 in the Northern Conference of the EHLP.

Defenseman and team captain Clayton Thomas said the team is determined to bounce back from the loss as they get ready for Saturday's game against the Jr. Rangers.

"I don't think anybody on our team that we should've lost that game. Next week, I think we'll bounce back and make a statement," Thomas said. "We're definitely not a team that's going to get shut out then lose again."
